The Role of Women in Islam: Beyond the Myths

The Role of Women in Islam: Beyond the Myths

By Esha Irfan

When people hear “Women in Islam,” they often get the wrong idea. But if you dive into the teachings of the Quran, you will see that women actually have an incredible status in Deen. Let us break down some of the most common myths and discover the truth because, spoiler alert, Islam was giving women rights long before it became a trend.

1. Spiritual Equality
First things first: men and women are spiritually equal in Islam. That means we are all in the same boat when it comes to praying, fasting, and trying to live a good life. The Quran (33:35) says that men and women have the same responsibilities and the same rewards on good deeds. There’s no “Boys club” when it comes to being a good Muslim!

2. Learning is Lit
You might think education for girls is a modern thing, but nope—Islam was on it way before. The Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) made it clear that seeking knowledge is a duty for everyone. Hazrat Aisha(R.A), one of his wives, was known for her intelligence and wisdom. She taught many people about Islam and narrated hundreds of ahadith. Islam was pushing for girl power centuries ago!

3. Money Matters
Long before women in other parts of the world could own property, Muslim women were out there managing their own finances. Take Hazrat Khadija, the first wife of the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W).
She was a successful businesswoman who ran her own trade caravan and had a substantial fortune.
Khadija’s entrepreneurial spirit showed that women could be financially independent and successful.
She is my favourite role model, and I aspire to be like her one day—confident, ambitious, and a true leader. So, yeah, women were bossing it long before it became cool in the world.

4. Marriage

A Partnership, not a Power Trip.
Marriage in Islam? It is all about mutual respect.

The Quran says that husbands and wives are like
garments for each other.

(2:187)

That means you are supposed to protect and support each other—sounds like a solid partnership, right? Plus, women have the right to choose who they marry.
Sorry, no forced marriages here.

5. The Real Deal
At the end of the day, women in Islam are highly honoured and respected. Many of the negative practices that are prevalent now are cultural. They have no credibility in Islam. So next time you hear someone say that women in Islam are oppressed, you can drop some pearls of wisdom and set the
record straight.
